The next morning Slavani woke up early. It was a beautifull sunny day and he was very excited because his mother asked him to go to the jungle to get her some of the plants she used as medicine. Since he was very small his father had taught him all about the different plants and how it can be usefull when people became sick. |

His mother packed him a backpack with food because it would be a long walk. The backpack she made from sheep skin. Slavani gave her a hug and thanked her for the food and the beautiful backpack she made for him. She waved goodbye to him as he left for the jungle. |

When he got there he was very tired and it was very hot. He lay down on the cool soft grass at the riverside to rest. "Oh this feels so good" he thought to himself as he enjoyed the cool grass and the sound of a nearby waterfall. |

After he rested for awhile he jumped into the river to cool himself. His good friend Tambese the fish was so happy to see him. Together the two enjoyed the refreshing water for a while then it was time for Slavani to move on. |

He put his backpack under a tree and started to look for the plants his mother needed. He was so happy to find a Mullein (also known as,verbascum,thapsus or Aaron's rod) But Slavani did not know all these names like we do today, he just known it as the "winter medicine bush" His mother used this plant to make a syrup from,which is very good to treat coughs and pleurisy.Even today we use this plant because it is exccellent for any chest conditions,bronchitis,pheumonia and cronic cattarh. Carefully Slavani Collected some of the flowers. Suddenly he heard a soft cry " Please help me!! somebody please help me!" |

He listened and walked in the direction the voice came from. Under a bush he found his friend Sipho the Toucan lay flat on his back crying with pain. " Oh Sipho what happened? What is wrong?" Slavani asked while he took Sipho in his arms. " I was blinded by the sun reflected from the waterfall and flew into the rock overthere" and he lifted his wing in the direction of a large rock. " I am in terrible pain" Sipho said." Slavani carefully put Sipho in the shade of the bush and said" Sipho just keep still , I'll go and get something that will make you better in no time!" |

Slavani grabbed a branch and swung from tree to tree with his eyes focussed downwards for the Day Lilly (Hemerocallis as we know it today) This plant is an excellent pain killer. " Oh there it is!" Slavani shouted with joy. |

He jumped down. " Day Lilly today I need your help. Sipho hurt himself and is in terrible pain." Slavani said. " Sure Slavani take one of my flowers and give it to Sipho, he will feel better in no time" Day Lilly said. Slavani took the flower, thanked Day Lilly and swung from tree to tree back to where Sipho was. He broke the flower in tiny pieces and fed them to Sipho. In no time Sipho felt better and Slavani was happy that he could help Sipho. Without the knowledge about all the plants he would not be able to help his friend today. " Thank you Slavani" Sipho said as he flew away. |

Slavani noticed that the sun was almost down and he quickly took the plants he collected and placed them in his backpack. He walked home as fast as he can. He knew his mother would understand why he were so late. She sure would be happy that Slavani used his knowledge to help a friend in pain.
